10 Wrestlers Who REFUSED To Win
1. Scott Hall Puts Chris Jericho Over - (Nitro 03/11/97)
Chris Jericho knows to help younger talent because that’s exactly what some of the elder statesman did with him when he was coming up in the business. Like how Scott Hall would always give him enough offence that fans got behind him in their matches in WCW. Scott went one further for Jericho at a Nitro show in ’97.
There was always rumours The Kliq in the WWF held down and bullied talent but Scott Hall is underappreciated for going out of his way for putting over rookies like the 1-2-3 Kid on Raw and helping Diamond Dallas Page get over in WCW. It was his demons that got the best of him throughout his career but everyone agrees he’s got a great mind for the business (having done training seminars at WWE’s Performance Centre and newcomers study his masterful heel work as Razor Ramon in the WWF).
It’s evident in his match with newcomer Chris Jericho on Nitro from November ’97 where Jericho shockingly picked up a victory over the nWo founder. But this wasn’t always meant to be the case. Hall was supposed to beat him senseless.
Hall, not satisfied with the booking, flipped the script and called an audible with Jericho that night. Hall’s said of the match:
“I was just supposed to keep hitting Chris with the Razor’s Edge, just keep dropping Jericho on his head until (Larry) Zbyszko came down. And I said, ‘Chris, but that’s not going to get a reaction.’ I said, ‘Think of some way to beat me out of my finish and get with me later’, so he came up with the idea to kick his feet off the turnbuckle and small package me and I said, ‘Don’t tell anybody. I’ll take all the heat.’ So when I came back through the curtain (after the match), Arn Anderson’s there at the Gorilla position just shaking his head, going, ‘You’re too much’. So now I’m walking back towards the locker room and I pass Eric Bischoff and he looks at me and he goes, ‘Didn’t I tell you to go over?’ and I’m going, ‘You’re telling me you didn’t like my segment?’ and he’s going, ‘No, no, but weren’t you supposed to win?’ and I said, ‘Does it really matter?’ and he just throws his hands up in the air.”
