In 2016 WWE were in severe need of reliable talent to fill the gaps in their rosters after going ahead with the brand extension. One of the wrestlers signed to help was Curt Hawkins. Hawkins remerged on SmackDown with an Eva Marie-like gimmick where sudden unfortunate incidents stopped him from competing. When he did finally get in the ring Hawkins picked up a win against Apollo Crews in November 2016 which would be his last victory until April 2019.

He went on a mammoth losing streak. WWE management didn’t particularly notice or pay attention either as they booked him to finally get a win over Heath Slater on some secondary lower-card show. Curt rejected the idea when it was given to him, claiming his losing streak was picking up fan support and when it eventually got broken it should mean something.

Curt explained:

"I was supposed to beat Heath on like Superstars or Main Event, and that was when finally I went to a writer. I made him go to Vince. Can you tell him I'd rather not? It was in Barclays, and he said something like, 'Let Hawkins get one in his hometown.' I was like, 'I'd rather not.’ Let's see where this goes, and I just knew that organically, if I just committed to it, something would come of it. I didn't realize how much I was going to lose, but it finally did pick up steam where I truly felt like people were invested in my matches like they had never been before."

On the WrestleMania 35 kickoff show the streak finally came to an end when Curt and Zack Ryder beat The Revival for the WWE Raw Tag Team Championships, with Hawkins scoring the pin with a roll-up for his team. It was a career highlight for Hawkins.
