10 Wrestlers Who Retired Way Too Early

5. AJ Lee

What else was there for AJ Lee to accomplish? Despite being just 5'2", Lee had stood head and shoulders above the rest of WWE's female performers for a number of years. AJ didn't look like the typical female star in a division where looks were seemingly everything. She was small, awkward and unorthodox - she simply wasn't meant to succeed. Hard work and a genuine passion for the sport ensured that she did.

AJ retired from professional wrestling in April 2015, just a few days after WrestleMania 31. The decision to quit came a year after her husband decided to walk away, and Lee has since stated that she felt stuck in the middle of the two. Injuries were also beginning to take their toll, and AJ has stated in her book that she has permanent damage to her cervical spine as a result of her career.

AJ retired at the sprightly age of 28, and a few months later the women of NXT arrived on the main roster. Could Lee have had some terrific matches with the likes of Bayley, Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch, and Alexa Bliss? Almost certainly.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
