The word "gimmick" seems like a strange one to use when discussing the professional wrestling exploits of Dan Severn. Simply put, he didn't really have one.

The shoot fighting badass was as much a force of nature inside of the squared-circle as he was outside of it. So, he didn't exactly jump at the chance to add some extra flavour or a new dimension to his on-screen character.

Perhaps the clearest example of this came in the form of the moment Severn turned down the chance to join up with The Undertaker's Ministry of Darkness faction. The UFC Hall of Famer just didn't fancy having '666' tattoo'd on his forehead and becoming a disciple to The Deadman. And when one of the road agents at that time threatened to have him lose multiple matches if he didn't co-operate, the MMA badass pondered, "What if I walk into your world of fantasy and turn it to reality."

Needless to say, WWE didn't ask twice and Severn was able to keep the promotion from tarnishing his legacy within that company and the combat sports world as a whole by giving "The Mark of the Beast" a hard no.
