10 Wrestlers Who Saved Their Careers TWICE With Gimmicks

4. Triple H (D-Generate and The Game)

WWE history wouldn't admit it now, but Triple H wasn't actually that over before joining Shawn Michaels and Chyna as D-Generation X. The snooty 'Connecticut Blueblood' gimmick he'd worked before often played before silence, and that didn't change until he started crotch-chopping and acting like a college jerk.

"Suck it" sold.

Inevitably, DX's box office success dwindled as the years rolled on. By late-1999, Hunter was again seeking something that'd take him to that next level. On their respective podcasts, both Bruce Prichard and Jim Ross have admitted that few other than Vince Russo genuinely believed Triple H had World Title credentials.

When he morphed into 'The Game', Triple H also transformed his fortunes. Nicknames like that and his 'Cerebral Assassin' guise gave him street cred with fans, and all the hard work he was doing in the weight room also started to pay off.

Had 'The Game' not come along, who knows if Trips would've ever broken through that upper-mid-card glass ceiling. To be fair, he'd never have got the chance to try without DX first.
