A stable that probably wasn’t as good as you’d like to remember, D-Generation X initially comprised the volatile, politicking pairing of Shawn Michaels and Triple H and the statuesque, quietly charismatic bodyguard Chyna. While the two boys clowned around in day-glo green, Chyna stared straight down the lens, daring anyone to mess with her charges.

There wasn’t too much of a plan for Joanie Laurer at this time - indeed a lack of ideas for the character was the cause of acrimony going forward - but her sheer presence and smirking steel elevated DX beyond the sophomoric. You watched her in the knowledge that, when she was finally forced into action, it was going to be thrilling, an incredible show of strength and aggression.

HBK and, particularly, HHH benefited immensely from Chyna’s presence. Kayfabe-wise, she frequently helped Hunter win matches, but more importantly she helped the then-somewhat bland sidekick transition into the era’s top heel.
