Lex Luger’s push of the early-to-mid-1990s is something of a contentious issue. On the one hand, he didn’t draw as well as expected, hence Vince McMahon’s decision to backtrack on plans. But in Luger’s defense, it felt like the company never quite whole-heartedly committed to pushing its newest babyface as the absolute top dog.

For starters, although Luger won his much-hyped match at SummerSlam 1993 with WWF Champion Yokozuna, the victory came via a count-out. So the title never changed hands.

Then, at the 1994 Royal Rumble, Luger was once again on the receiving end of a half-hearted push when he co-won the Rumble match alongside Bret Hart.

Obviously, there were a number of other factors at play in the months between those two events, but one could argue that Luger never quite got the kind of big win that might have helped turn his push into a successful one. Had he won the ’94 Rumble – on his own, as opposed to jointly with Hart – perhaps his mid-90s main event experiment would be talked about slightly more favourably.
