10 Wrestlers Who Suffered From The Curse Of Comparison
2. Chris Masters - Lex Luger
Lex Luger’s persona, prior to becoming yet another American hero, had potential. He was most compelling as a narcissist, a role that could be predominantly propelled by his good looks and physique. Though it was a brief run, Luger’s short-lived gimmick proved memorable enough to be heavily cited 22 years later.
As with Luger, Chris Masters’ booking overwhelmingly focused on his muscles, often quite literally, with close ups of flexing limbs and bulging masses. The new Narcissus quickly proved himself green. Steven Richards’ broken nose was offered up as evidence.
In 2006, Masters took time away from the ring due to battles with addiction and mental health. When he returned from rehab, he was noticeably smaller in stature. His lack of muscle was mercilessly mocked on-air by Triple H. Though he gained much bulk back, he never reached his former condition.
In a post-WWE interview, Masters was asked who wrestling fans liken him to? He displayed negative sentiments towards comparisons:
“Lex Luger unfortunately…a lot of the body guys […] but I really don't want to be compared to anyone else. I want to make my own mark. I want to be Chris Masters.”
