10 Wrestlers Who Were Given Way Too Many Chances
2. Curtis Axel
If Curtis Axel had half the charisma of his father, he would have been over the minute he debuted. It's not exactly fair to compare the two, but it's unfortunately inevitable. Despite being in the company since 2010, and receiving a handful of opportunities, nothing has ever worked for Axel. Nothing.
Axel was first introduced as Michael McGillicutty, which was one of the worst names a wrestler has ever be given. Fans thought if only he could break free from that, then he had a chance. Even if he was given Joe Hennig, it likely wouldn’t have mattered.
Axel was a lackey in The Nexus, but was sent back down to developmental when the angle ran its course. He returned, and was re-branded as Curtis Axel. He was given a huge push out of the gate, when he was surprisingly announced as the next Paul Heyman Guy. Axel (with a still terrible name) picked up some victories over Triple H, which is not something you see often. Despite having one of the best talkers in the business by his side, though, Axel didn’t get over.
After that, he landed himself some comedy gimmicks that weren’t all that funny. His Axelmania run was briefly fun, but his run as a Hogan impersonator was embarrassing. The Social Outcasts were terrible for everyone, and now he’s currently “Mr. Irrelevant”, which is also doomed to fail.
Axel is technically sound in the ring, and he's known to be a good trainer, but something just isn't translating well for him on the main roster.
