In 2006, WWE decided to relaunch Extreme Championship Wrestling as their third brand.

ECW's return also meant the return of the ECW World Heavyweight Championship - a title held by such legends as Shane Douglas, Terry Funk, and The Sandman. The title was awarded to a man who had been a contemporary of these icons - Mr. Monday Night himself, Rob Van Dam.

Oh, by the way, he was also the WWE Champion at the time.

RVD had beaten John Cena to capture his first and only WWE Championship at ECW One Night Stand. Two days later, Paul Heyman rewarded Van Dam with the new ECW title. This was huge, as it showed just how serious WWE appeared to be about their new brand. The WWE Champion was now an ECW regular and who knew what was going to happen next.

As it turned out, what happened next was that RVD got busted for pot and was stripped of both titles within a month.

Oh dear.
