At one point, Dolph Ziggler looked destined to become a main event player in WWE. He actually did get the opportunity to take part in several pay-per-view main events, most notably TLC 2012, where he battled John Cena in a ladder match and defeated him for the World Heavyweight Championship.

That night felt like it was finally Ziggler’s ticket to the top of the promotion, but it all fell apart so quickly. He has never recovered.

Just two pay-per-views after that big night, he was stuck in a low point in his career. He had lost his title due to a concussion, and was feuding with Kofi Kingston for no real reason.

From time-to-time, WWE has teased fans that Ziggler was about to get a little something. He was given a key role at Survivor Series 2014, as he was the last surviving member of his team, but it never amounted to anything. A one-off Heavyweight Championship match at SummerSlam 2016 didn't do much for him either.

Over the past couple years, fans began begging for The Showoff to turn heel once more, as he never quite caught on as a face. But the company kept waiting and waiting to do it, and the apathy for him began to grow. By the time he was finally turned it was too late. No one was going to buy him as a big deal again, because they had seen him job out far too many times in the previous years.

These days Ziggler is feuding with Apollo Crews and Kalisto in the midcard, which is far from where people would have predicted he’d land a few years ago. He may still be involved in a big match now and then in the future—most likely when top stars are injured and the roster is feeling a bit thin—but it’s clear he’s never going to be a big player and really show off what he’s made of.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
