The torrent of critical abuse John Cena’s received online over close to two decades regarding his punches is staggering. Wrestling fans detest whenever John swings for the fences with his rivals. His set of punches looks like he’s windmilling without a care in the world with his massive 20-inch biceps. The debate rages on as to which looks worse: John on the attack with his blows or when he applies the STF with zero pressure?

John was never the most graceful in the ring but it was noticeable how better a performer he became in the ‘10s compared to his time in the ring the decade prior. His moveset gained more credibility, with him adding the hurricanrana, diving leg drop bulldog and flip piledriver to his arsenal. One thing that didn’t improve though were his punches. They remained dire to watch, though it didn’t particularly matter in the grand scheme of things given the crowd would pop huge whenever Cena made his comeback with them. His strikes overall looked as if were playing him in WWE 2K20 and it glitched mid-punch.

And then in 2018, as if he were actively trolling the internet, he introduced the world to his sixth move of doom: the ‘Lightning Fist’, which is a theatrical punch to the head.
