During his last couple of years in WWE, Rey Mysterio was worn out from all the years he'd dedicated to the company working a full time schedule in spite of his mounting injuries. He let it be known that he wanted to leave WWE in favor of wrestling in Mexico on a lighter schedule with higher pay.

With Mysterio being one of the roster's top merch sellers, WWE would not let the former World Heavyweight Champion leave until his contract expired in 2014. When it ran down, he did, in fact, start wrestling a lighter workload, mostly for AAA in Mexico.

When he returned to WWE in 2018, he was refreshed. Unfortunately, he hasn't been able to shake off his injury problems, his WrestleMania 35 match opposite Samoa Joe sadly cut short due to a damaged ankle.
