10 Wrestling Careers Damaged By WWE Backstage Politics

7. Marty Jannetty

Before we consider the case of Marty Jannetty, it's fair to state that Marty Jannetty is a man with a lot of personal demons, many of which were responsible for his various issues in the WWF, not just the element of politics. Marty's affiliation with Shawn Michaels seems to have been incredibly detrimental to his time in the company, as Shawn was somewhat infamous for using his influence as a star to bury other competitors. For example in Jannetty's return in late 1992, Marty was released after one pay-per-view match at the Royal Rumble due to rumors he was under the influence, started by none other than Shawn Michaels. In May 1993, Jannetty was allowed to return to the company with the help of Curt Hennig, who vouched for Jannetty and claimed that Michaels was to blame for the sub-par match at the Royal Rumble. It's often believed that Michaels dropping the Intercontiental Championship to Jannetty was a punishment for lying about Jannetty's condition. It's not inherently fair to say that without Michaels interference Jannetty would have been a success, as his next release from the company was most likely because of the Charles Austin court case, which saw Jannetty accused of breaking a fellow worker's neck. Shawn Michaels certainly hurt the credibility and career of his former partner, but it's not clear if he'd have been much better off, anyway.
