10 Wrestling Characters Which Terrified Young Children
2. Come To Papa
Based on the spirit of Louisiana Voodoo icon, Baron Samedi, Papa Shango kept kids awake at night due to his antics on WWF telecasts. Discussing the character in interviews since, the man behind the ghostly face paint, Charles Wright, recalls that children thought the character was cool, but couldn't overcome their uneasiness with a massive man who could possess stars as resolute as The Ultimate Warrior. In his own interviews, Bret Hart has remarked that he feels the promotion dropped the ball with Shango, saying he was a tremendous character and a "good hand" inside the ring, ideal for a position as one of the top heels in the company. The witch doctor would never get to that level however, although he did feud with Warrior and get involved in the finish of the Hulk Hogan vs. Sid Justice main event at Wrestlemania VIII. Wright would go on to have much more success as both Kama and The Godfather, but his Papa Shango gimmick has become somewhat mythical amongst wrestling fans, who remember being scared senseless as children.
