10 Wrestling Combinations That Shouldn't Have Worked But Did
7. Darby Allin And Sting
Aside from face paint and a penchant for the colour black, there wasn't really much that connected Sting to Darby Allin when the Stinger made his AEW bow.
Sting was a decorated legend with over a dozen World Championship reigns under his belt, whilst Darby was a scrappy up-and-comer with a blatant disregard for his own body and well-being.
But none of this stopped them from teaming for Sting's first match in AEW - a cinematic encounter against Team Taz's Ricky Starks and Powerhouse Hobbs.
This return match set the tone for the rest of the pair's run in AEW. It presented Sting as much darker than we'd been used to, fusing his mystical WCW persona with Allin's grungy, punky demeanour.
Darby's love for endangering himself also seemed to rub off on the older fella. Over the following months, Sting went from competing in pre-taped matches to taking full-on bumps to diving off balconies through tables in his early 60s.
Rather than the legend teaching the youngster a few tricks, it was the other way around with Sting embracing Darby's lifestyle and earning legions of new fans in the process.
Just watch your hips, Sting, they really aren't what they used to be.
