The comically mismatched Kane and X-Pac, on paper, had few too many Such Good Sh*t overtones, but the partnership worked to an astounding extent in front of the camera.

The whole thing was preposterous, obviously, even by Attitude Era standards. Kane was profoundly, psychologically disturbed, so much so that he spoke exclusively in the language of violence. Enter X-Pac, a sort of stoner jock Frasier Crane in this scenario. The cool dude with a big heart helped the demonic mute find his voice not with years of intensive, patient therapy, but earnest encouragement to get his hole.

Kane, in turn, became a bigger brother in a somehow organic transition into a babyface role. The friendship fleshed out the Kane character, allowing the man behind it to showcase his sharp comedic timing, thus adding years and years to his career.

The partnership also called for the return of Pac's sublime in-ring skill, much welcomed by the residual New Gen geeks, because Kane was the wanton destroyer in this dynamic. Free of the brawling virtually all WWF guys did in that period, Pac was renewed as a sympathetic, massive-bumping flyer.
