Feeling the match type made famous in Japanese promotions like FMW and IWA would thrill WWE's audience, then-WWE writer Court Bauer pitched an 'Exploding Death Match' to Vince McMahon in 2006 and waited for the inevitable angry response from his boss. Much to Bauer's surprise, McMahon gave it some thought.

Bauer told Wrestling Inc that plans were then put in place to offer something different on SmackDown, and it looked like a match laced with (controlled) C4 explosives might be the way forward. That's when Kevin Dunn got involved and changed the entire idea into the Punjabi Prison. Seriously.

The next time Bauer heard about this new match that was going to save SmackDown from becoming stale, it had changed from explosions to the bamboo cage. Everyone was shocked. Even Dusty Rhodes had to reach for his glasses, such was his disbelief over what Dunn had convinced McMahon was better than the exciting Death Match.
