10 Wrestling Facts We Didn't Know Last Week (Aug 3)

1. Mr. America Was Supposed To Have A Mask Vs. Hair Match

Mr America Hulk Hogan

"I am not Hulk Hogan, brother!"

So said Hogan during his short run as the masked "Mr. America" in 2003. The gimmick, a poor excuse to prolong Hulk's feud with Vince McMahon, wasn't actually supposed to be so fleeting. Bruce Prichard said as much on his podcast, and he revealed that Vince and Hulk were supposed to close out their feud with a Mask vs. Hair match.

The showdown was pencilled in to take place at WWE's Great American Bash reprise that summer before McMahon got cold feet on the idea and cancelled it; he also postponed the Bash comeback until 2004.

Hogan's win (as America) over long-time nemesis Roddy Piper at Judgement Day in May was meant to lead in nicely to the McMahon blow off. It wasn't until Vince told his creative team that he "didn't get" the Mr. America gimmick that WWE decided to move on from the experiment, unmask Hulk and focus their efforts elsewhere.

Who knows if the Mask vs. Hair match would even have taken place without McMahon's decision. Hulk left WWE in early July anyway and didn't make a return to the company until 2005.
