Together as The Rockers, Marty Jannetty and Shawn Michaels were gold. Their high-flying antics and double-team moves made them teen heartthrobs to rival The Rock N' Roll Express, and they quickly developed a closeness behind the scenes that made them seem like brothers.

It wasn't always that way.

Marty told The Hannibal TV that he thought Shawn was a "nerdy ass Texas boy" when he first stumbled upon him in the AWA. He and a wrestler called D.J. Peterson were asked by the Gagne family to take Shawn under their wing, keep him out of trouble and "show him a good time". When they met Michaels, Jannetty and D.J had to stifle their laughter.

The future HBK was wearing blue jeans that were pulled all the way up to his chest and looked like the new kid at school. Marty had been sold on this super-cool youngster who'd have the girls swooning, and he couldn't believe how nervous and nerdy Shawn was at first.
