As aforementioned during the intro to this piece, AJ Styles winning the WWE United States Title on a house show inside the hallowed halls of Madison Square Garden came as a complete surprise. WWE don't make a habit of doing things like this on live events, so this win on July 7 felt pretty special.

According to Sportskeeda, the main reason AJ won the belt in such fashion was so that his upcoming WWE DVD release would have another big moment to talk about. It's been 9 months since Styles became WWE Champion, so it makes sense to believe those in charge felt the Styles story needed a more recent success to discuss in depth.

Again, WWE do not make house show title switches regularly, so this would act as a real talking point on AJ's documentary. Not only that, but the mere fact it took place in MSG makes the win feel more historic than a victory elsewhere.
