1. Austin Vs. Goldberg Was Actually The Initial Plan For Invasion
Everyone who sat through it knows just how botched the whole Invasion angle was in the summer of 2001.
Top WCW stars like Bill Goldberg, Ric Flair, the nWo, Sting and more decided to sit home and collect on guaranteed money left over from their AOL/Time Warner contracts when WCW went to the wire. That stopped them from being part of the Invasion, and it prevented the WWF from running several dream matches fans of both companies craved.
Matches like Goldberg vs. Steve Austin.
On his Something To Wrestle With podcast, Bruce Prichard analysed the Invasion pay-per-view and told how that dream bout almost became a reality. It was the one WWF management wanted most of all, but they couldn't convince Goldberg to come in for less money, and so the plan was quickly changed to Austin heading up the WCW/ECW side himself.
Invasion suffered as a result despite still popping a big buyrate. There's no doubt having stars like Goldberg on the card would have made it more memorable, and the sought after clash with Austin would've happened had Bill not been tied down to guaranteed money.
