10 Wrestling Facts We Didn't Know Last Week (March 18)
2. John Cena's Signature Taunt Came From Fooling Around As A Kid
Almost as soon as he started playing the role of a wannabe rapper on WWE television, John Cena began extending his hand in front of his face and waving it back and forth. Normally, this action was accompanied by the phrase, 'You Can't See Me'.
It was designed to be said in a mocking tone, and it's something that's stuck with Cena ever since.
Up until now, the origins of the hand gesture were never made clear to wrestling fans. That has changed with the release of the new 'Hustle, Loyalty & Respect: The World of John Cena' book that WWE have released. An excerpt on the promotion's official website revealed where 'You Can't See Me' came from.
Testing out hip-hop beats with his brothers before the release of his album, Cena's sibling Sean made the gesture to be silly. Soon after, Sean dared John to perform the action on an episode of Velocity. Cena did, and the rest is history.
Apparently, the gesture has been modified by John, because it actually came from a stupid dance his brother would do which included more head movement.
