Expectations were not very high for AJ Styles vs. Shane McMahon at WrestleMania 33. Reservations only heightened when it became clear that the match between renegade heel and SmackDown Commissioner would actually open the pay-per-view.

Telling Inside The Ropes all about his own thoughts, Styles said he was proud of the match because it managed to surpass his own private expectations. Meeting up with Shane to plan out what they'd do in the curtain jerker, AJ says both were aware that people didn't think the bout would be a show-stealer.

Afterwards, the pair agreed that low expectations going in had actually helped them. AJ doesn't think it was match of the night by any stretch of the imagination, but felt he and McMahon pulled off some spots fans didn't expect.
