Employed full time by the then-WWF from 1998-2001, Gangrel was an under-rated vampire character who helped blood Edge and Christian onto the main roster. When he was released in 2001, various reports online suggested that weight problems had been behind the promotion's decision.

Speaking to Sean Waltman for his 1, 2, 360 Show podcast, Gangrel himself said there were other factors at play. Specifically, the wrestler was always flirting with disaster in the company and irking management with his behaviour. A carefree individual, he came close to being fired on more than one occasion. Most memorably (in Gangrel's view) was an incident also involving Marc Mero and Luna Vachon.

In 1998, Luna and Sable didn't see eye-to-eye behind the scenes. When Mero - Sable's then-husband - called out Vachon in catering, Gangrel stood up for her and threatened his peer. Flooring Mero, Gangrel was then summoned to Vince McMahon's office alongside Marc and Luna.

Explicitly, McMahon wanted to know if Gangrel had actually punched Mero. Upon finding out that the pair hadn't come to blows, Vince told Gangrel that he would be fired if they ever did.
