10 Wrestling Facts We Didn't Know Last Week (Sept 28)

1. Injuries Almost Got Sid Rehired In 2008

The same year that WWE were giving Ric Flair the retirement tour treatment, they were almost forced to dip into history and bring back another former World Champion. That man, incredibly, was none other than then 48-year old Sycho Sid.

Injuries had hit the roster hard by late-2008. Randy Orton had collar bone troubles, John Cena was recovering from surgery to repair a herniated disc in his neck and Edge was taking some time off to heal his own neck issues. That left a sizeable hole near the top of the card, and Vince McMahon had a solution: big Sid.

WWE contemplated the pros and cons of bringing Sid in before Unforgiven. Watching that show, it makes a bit more sense. Of the two Scramble Matches for the World Heavyweight and WWE Titles, only a handful of the men involved were credible headliners. Sid had been a proven commodity before, and Vince thought he could plug a gap.

When Prichard and others brought up the issue of his age and limited ring abilities, McMahon said he didn't care. All Sid had to do was stand there, look menacing and deliver the odd Chokeslam. By the next week, he'd forgotten all about the idea.
