10 Wrestling Fan Complaints That Absolutely Suck
3. Journalism Doesn't Belong In Wrestling
Twitter is infected by this take, the most recent proponent of which wasn't even a fan: it was Baron Corbin circulating material from an anti-AEW fan page.
Certain wrestling fans don't believe that journalism has a role in pro wrestling, and as Corbin put it, pathetically conflating his defensive bullsh*t with the worst of real life beyond WWE's bubble, Meltzer and his ilk are a "cancer". He continued:
"He inspires hatred to anything and everything he doesn't like or agree with. For example I may not like a band and that’s fine. But what separates us is I don’t have to continually bash them online or work to get others to hate them as well. I don’t have the time or energy to be that negative of a person."
This take is consistent with those who suffer Dave Meltzer Derangement Syndrome. Dave Meltzer wasn't there, he couldn't know. Dave Meltzer spoils wrestling. Dave Meltzer is biased. Dave Meltzer hasn't taken a bump, so he can't say anything.
It's all so putrid because pro wrestling as an industry is putrid and not of significant interest to the mainstream media. If any industry requires journalism to challenge it, it's professional wrestling. There's no union, the pay discrepancy between management and worker is disgusting, there's no health insurance, Vince McMahon routinely distorts the truth to investors, it's unregulated, and the biggest game in town remains impossibly, stupidly dangerous.
