10 Wrestling Gimmicks Which Were Massive Ribs

7. Little Davey Meltzer

It's an age old argument in professional sport that those who've never played the game have no right to pass comment on it. It's obviously illogical, and seemingly isolated to the (often literal) field. After all, David Attenborough didn't personally have to undergo millions of years of evolution from simplest cyanobacteria into a fully-formed authority on natural history to become one, and nor is Roger Ebert's critical film analysis undermined by his complete lack of Academy Awards. Yet it persists.

In professional wrestling, there's pretty much only one analytical authority: The Wrestling Observer's Dave Meltzer. Despite how utterly arbitrary it all is, his ever-inflating star ratings are amongst the most divisive things in wrestling today - but at least he has the hands-on experience to back it up. Well... sort of.

After the respected journalist lambasted Herb Abrams' wonderfully chaotic UWF promotion in the early '90s, the promoter gracefully responded by sending a jobber known as 'Davey Meltzer' out to be pounded to a pulp. After being brutalised by Steve Williams, a man stiffer than starched steel, the phony journo had an issue of the Observer shoved down his gob. It was one of the company's less barmy moments.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
