10 Wrestling Heel Turns That Should Be Erased From History

7. Sting

We had never seen Sting as a heel in WCW before. At one point, he was the back-up plan for the nWo’s third man in case Hulk Hogan didn’t want to do it, and he was very hesitant about that idea. So saving his big turn would at least be somewhat interesting...as long as it wasn’t in 1999 when the company was the creative equivalent of House Party 3.

But WCW was in a weird phase that year where they seemed to have gone back to 1994, as if the New World Order have never happened at all. Hulk Hogan was the lead babyface again, in all his red and yellow glory. And not only were the fans fed up with this s**t, but Sting was too, which made him quite a hero.

At Fall Brawl 1999, Sting finally snapped and turned heel with the help of a few other guys who were much more relevant years earlier with Sid Vicious and Lex Luger. Hulkster and Sting were set to have their big rematch at Halloween Havoc, but Vince Russo and Ed Ferrara came in and gave us a three minute Goldberg/Sting main event instead.

Within weeks, Sting returned to the face side of things, and not until years later in TNA did he experiment with evilness again. Well, if WCW could forget it, then we can too.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
