10 Wrestling Legends WCW Buried
7. Curt Hennig
One of the most technically skilled, gifted wrestlers of all time, Curt Hennig was never quite the same after a severe back injury in 1991. After several uninspired comebacks in WWE, he jumped ship and debuted on Nitro in 97 where he went back to wrestling full-time (much to the chagrin of Lloyds of London).
Decent as a face and effective as a traitorous nWo heel, Hennig was a solid hand mostly kept out of the main event scene. In 1999, he finally fulfilled his decade-plus long dream of doing a cowboy gimmick when he formed the West Texas Rednecks. With popular rapper Master P now leading the No Limit Soldiers faction, the Rednecks were presented as southern country musicians. The feud leads to the deliberately daft song 'Rap is Crap', a surprise hit that gained some traction on country radio stations.
WCW really should've turned the increasingly popular Rednecks face at that point. A few more singles from the group might've provided more mainstream exposure and revenue for the promotion. Instead, seemingly angry with fans for preferring the Rednecks to the No Limit Soldiers, WCW dropped the angle entirely.
Hennig moved onto a series of bogus retirement angles in 99 before losing a feud to Shawn Stasiak in 2000. The Stasiak feud was the deepest cut of all in hindering Hennig. Posing as a Mr Perfect imposter, Stasiak beating his apparent idol made Hennig look weak and past it. An even worse burial than that time Kane bizarrely lost to imposter Kane.
