10 Wrestling Matches That Are So Bad They Are Hilariously Awesome
5. The Reverse Battle Royal - TNA Bound For Glory 2007
Nobody demonstrates the fine line between booking that is genius, and overcooked insanity, quite like Vince Russo. 99% of the time his overbooking is just angina-inducing stupidity.
However, that 1% of the time, he’ll produce a piece of magic like the Reverse Battle Royal at Bound for Glory 2007.
What is a Reverse Battle Royal? Good question. Because it seems that nobody in TNA understood what one was either, even when they were competing in it. And that is what makes it so breathtakingly entertaining.
The concept of the match was for a bunch of guys outside the ring to try and climb over the top rope and get into the ring, and once a bunch of them were inside the match would change into a regular battle royal.
That is until two men were left, and then they would have a singles match, and then the winner of that got a title shot. Not the title mind you – a shot at the title.
Confused yet? Good.
It might be hard to believe, but the execution of this match was thoroughly woeful. The poor, humiliated wrestlers had to pretend that they were so mind-bogglingly stupid, that they wouldn't just try and climb into the ring as fast as possible.
They also had to pretend that getting into the ring was a challenge, and given that there was only 16 of them, they also had to try and convince the audience that there were no gaps at any stage that someone could just sneak through to get onto the apron, and over the top rope.
The confusion of everyone involved from the commentators to the wrestlers is unparalleled because none of this makes any sense. Even the pinfall was insane – nobody saw Eric Young taking the victory, so it was completely anti-climactic.
It was the perfect end to a match that was built on befuddled ideas and executed with talent that would have rather been anywhere else at that time.
