10 Wrestling Matches With Backstories You’ll NEVER Believe

3. Bret Hart Vs. British Bulldog

When: WWF SummerSlam 1992

What Happened: Bret Hart still considers this one of his greatest achievements.

Backstage, a visibly-shattered Davey Boy Smith admitted to Hart shortly before the match that he’d been on a drug-fuelled binge with several other wrestlers instead of training for their main event. Then, the bell sounded and Bulldog told Bret he’d forgotten the whole layout. Ever the pro, Hart single-handedly guided his mate through.

Nobody really noticed that Smith was out of sorts either, which is actually amazing. Obviously, Bulldog contributed as best he could, but Bret masterfully disguised how done in Davey was and called a total cracker completely on the fly in-ring. How did he manage that?!

Bulldog didn't last too much longer in the WWF after SummerSlam. That main event Intercontinental Title success is regarded as his best federation moment for a reason, but Smith owed everything to Hart for making it possible.

Bret showed how reliable (and skilled) he was when the pressure was on.
