10 Wrestling Mistakes & Botches That Became Storylines

6. Matt Sydal’s Awkward Shooting Star Press

Matt Sydal’s debut in the Casino Battle Royale at AEW All Out 2020 pay-per-view was sadly hindered with a bigtime botch when he went to hit his usually flawless Shooting Star Press finisher. His timing and balance were off as he leapt off the top rope and awkwardly came crashing down hard to the mat.

Sydal thankfully saw the funny side of it afterwards and had fun with it after on Twitter with all the GIFs and trolling that were made of it.

On Being the Elite, AEW brilliantly gave it a storyline explanation. In a segment involving The Young Bucks and Kenny Omega telling Michael Nakazawa backstage at All Out he wasn’t booked for the Casino Battle Royale, Nakazawa got mad and sought out vengeance on Sydal. It was revealed later on BTE before the Battle Royale (in storyline) Nakazawa went to the ring and sprayed baby oil on the top rope Sydal would jump off. Nakazawa later claimed in a segment "I took this oil, I oiled up the turnbuckle, I wanted you to slip and possibly break your neck!" Sydal chased him down. This resulted in a match between the two on an episode of Dark with Sydal getting his revenge by making him tap out.
