Kevin Owens and Chris Jericho were excited heading into WrestleMania 33 season. Both knew they'd have a killer match for the Universal Title on WWE's biggest show of 2017, and they enjoyed working with one another anyway. Then, Vince McMahon changed his mind on that late in the day.

Goldberg's comeback had worked out well at the prior year's Survivor Series, so Vince took the Universal belt off KO, put it on Bill and went with a Goldberg vs. Brock Lesnar rematch at 'Mania instead. Meanwhile, Kev and Chris were relegated to the United States Title picture, and Jericho was not happy about it.

Vince then gleefully ripped their bout to shreds backstage. That ticked Jericho off further, and he started thinking about exploring options outside the promotion for the first time in decades. That, of course, resulted in gigs with New Japan and Chris eventually leaving WWE to help launch a new competitor in AEW.
