6. A Botched WCW Invasion

What initially looked like perhaps the most exciting storyline in the history of the business very quickly became one of the most disappointing.

After Vince McMahon purchased long-time Monday Night War rivals WCW, fans were understandably frothing at the mouth over the idea of the likes of Sting, Goldberg, and the nWo finally clashing with WWE's own heavy hitters.

With those WCW icons happily staying at home and getting paid the remainder of their AOL Time Warner contracts, though, WWE instead brought in the likes of Booker T, Lance Storm, and Diamond Dallas Page to kick off an invasion angle that would eventually see the company absolutely annihilate the forces of WCW and ECW.

And while this Alliance vs. WWE war would eventually lead to one of the most successful non-big-four PPVs of all time, that still didn't change the fact that many who had spent years wondering what a WWE vs. WCW in-ring battle would look like ended up feeling entirely let down by these largely underwhelming months of WWE just burying their one-time competition.

A ton of WCW fans understandably tuned out and never returned during this absolute mess of a storyline.

And there were likely many more long-suffering WWE fans who pondered whether it was time to take a break from this wrestling nonsense after witnessing 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin bizarrely join the "enemy" and even more unwelcome McMahon family mayhem.
