Is it really surprising that, of all the events in WWE history that sent the internet into a frenzy, this is number one? The Monday Night Wars represented the most exciting time in wrestling history - two companies slugging it out for supremacy amidst a sea of rabid fans. To see that duopoly suddenly come to an end was one of the biggest moments imaginable, and appropriately set online discussion to overdrive. It's hard to compare WWF buying out WCW to anything else, given the fact that nothing of that scale had ever occurred in wrestling before - and this incomparability is precisely why it's considered such an earth-shattering moment. One of the world's two biggest promotions buying out the other instantly changed the landscape of the business, and shaped the future of wrestling to this day. Its effects were incredibly wide-reaching, and fans scrambled online to find out all the insider info they could. Which workers would be granted new contracts? What was to become of the WCW name? Which dream matches were set to occur? Of course, we now know of the immensely disappointing Invasion angle; but at the time, it couldn't have been a more exciting period to be an online wrestling fan.
