10 Wrestling Moments That Changed Everything
10. Hulk Hogan Wins His First WWF Title
Wrestling didn't have a package like Hulk Hogan's before he tore through The Iron Sheik in 1984 and bagged his very first WWF Heavyweight Title.
Sure, older names like 'Superstar' Billy Graham had muscles and charisma coming out their ears, but they didn't have that magnetic marketing appeal Hogan's Hulkamania crusade did, and Graham (for all his power) wasn't a top babyface. Hulk was, and Vince McMahon saw dollar signs aplenty in him.
After Hogan's ascent to the top of the WWF mountain, there was no turning back. McMahon threw everything he had behind Hulk and promoted him as a larger-than-life superstar capable of transcending traditional pro wrestling to take on Hollywood's biggest and best. It was an exciting time, one that'd change the industry forever.
Suddenly, a champion's ability to actually wrestle was secondary to how fans reacted to him, how much merchandise he could shift and what mainstream appeal he had. Hogan was a different animal, and he created the blueprint for what "WWF Superstar" meant.
