What makes something scary is subjective.

Wrestling's scariest moments don't need to be real either. Some of WWE's freakiest have been 100% fabricated, and some are even hammier than that big piece of meat Otis used to carry around. A fear of the unknown helps though, and it is true that something like workers collapsing at ringside is always going to draw attention (staged or otherwise) from fans.

'What if that was real?!'.

The biz enjoys scaring the ever-living-p*ss out of you too. This stuff is supposed to be dramatic, after all, but sometimes that drama is unplanned - there's a nice mix of authentic scares and pre-planned ones here. All of them have one thing in common: They terrified punters in the stands and those watching from home.

Suspending one's disbelief is important when it comes to wrestling, and it's often fun to reminisce about times when childhood innocence made that easier. Perhaps it was a creepy character who kept you awake at night, or maybe seeing others kids bawl their eyes out in fear made everything seem that bit more horrific.

These moments scared the crap out of everyone.

10. Doink The Clown Arrives

You probably know somebody who suffers from Coulrophobia. Basically, it's an intense fear of clowns, so imagine how Coulrophobics felt when Doink wandered onto screens for the first time back in 1992. That, ladies and gentlemen, must've been a banner day for toilet paper sales.

Matt Borne's portrayal of the clown was so unbelievably sinister too. The way he shot evil glances at audience members (almost like he was picturing all the ways he could torture them) one minute, then switched to an over-the-top laugh the next was...well, it was sh*t scary.

It's no exaggeration to say that Doink The Clown still ranks up there as one of the creepiest characters in wrestling history, and he may never be topped. No, not even Bray Wyatt's 'Fiend' could match Borne's sad clown with menace behind his eyes and that psychotic, twisted grin.

Some fans were likely glad to see the back of Doink when WWE eventually phased the character out.
