10 Wrestling Returns We Marked Out For

1. The Rock

The Rock 2011 Return

It would be hard to blame The Rock for never wanting to show up in WWE again. After all, he was one of the biggest movies stars on the planet, and didn’t need to associate with his old company anymore. While we always hoped he would return for a night, it seemed that if he ever did, it would be for a Hall of Fame appearance way after his movie career had peaked.

Instead, he came back in 2011 after being away from wrestling for over seven years. It was simply an iconic moment.

In his absence, John Cena had taken over as the top guy in the company. But most fans of a certain age didn’t like the trade-off. They longed for the days of Steve Austin, The Rock and just more attitude in general. It was like he came back to save us from all that. Without saying it exactly, he let us know that the current product was crap and needed to be shaken up.

Everything he laid out about Cena just felt spot on (including his Fruity Pebbles clothing slam, which later earned him a big endorsement deal) and we hung on every single word he spoke. The emotion he displayed for being in front of a live crowd seemed absolutely genuine, and his mic skills had amazingly not lost a step.

Rock simply showed that no one in the modern era was anywhere close to being in his league in terms of charisma. It was truly an electrifying return, and one that will be hard to ever top.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
