Something a bit less egregious here, not that it doesn't shatter one's image of one of wrestling's most terrifying figures ever.
Road Warrior Hawk was an unforgettable presence and drawing attraction throughout one of pro wrestling's most popular ever periods. In an increasingly cartoonish landscape, he was at once one of the realest-feeling tough guys and ripped from the pages of a badass graphic novel. In short, with his ridiculous physique and super-marketable aggression, he was the near-perfect figure in a halcyon time.
When he made his seemingly impossible threats, of ripping his opponent's faces off, you believed the man - who incidentally might well be the most underrated promo ever - fully. He was a man who couldn't even feel the effects of a friggin' piledriver. That's how hard he was. Pain fuelled him. That's how much of a destructive badass he was.
All of which made his interruption of a 1998 Vader promo in the WWF that bit more soul-destroying.
Hawk's face, man. He looked a little bit embarrassed. He looked in that small moment like the jobbers he mutilated in the mid-80s.
