10 Wrestling Stunts Which Nearly Went Very Wrong

7. Gangrel, A Vampire, Gets It In The Neck

Gangrel Being Choked

Following a slightly terrible Hell in a Cell contest between The Undertaker and Corporation muscle Big Boss Man at WrestleMania XV, His Darkliness' adherents The Brood descended on the ring, where they trussed the losing security detail into a noose and left him hanging. For all visual intents, Boss Man was 'dead', and it was on with the show as Gangrel and co. sneered evilly.

The world's friendliest vampire may have chuckled then, but he was laughing out the other side of his face when the same fate nearly befell him - for real - during an angle a month earlier. Or at least, he would have been, had he been able to breathe.

On the 1 February '99 edition of Raw, The Ministry of Darkness tried to recruit the Gothically synergetic Brood to their cause, and they felt the best way to do that was to kill leader Gangrel. The Undertaker brought a noose to the ring, which lackey JBL proceeded to strangulate the Brood's boss with. He was then flung over the apron - only to get ensnared in the hangman's hold for real.

"The rope cinched up," recalls the en-knotted David Heath. "I remember sitting there on TV and everything was just going away. I made my peace with God… I couldn’t get it off. It was locked tight."

Thankfully, at the last second, the chokehold was relinquished, and the blood rushed back to the bloodsucker's face. He probably had a double helping for dinner that night.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
