In the late 80s, Jim Crocket Promotions held an annual tag team tournament known as the Crockett Cup. The format was a single elimination and comprised of as many as 18 tag teams and the winner would receive a one million dollar cash prize along with the Crocket memorial trophy. The Road Warriors won the inaugural event in 1986, Dusty Rhodes and Nikita Koloff got the W in 1987 and Sting and Lex Luger took it all in the final tournament in 1988. Each event also held an NWA world heavyweight title defense where Ric Flair escaped with the belt all three years.
