10 WWE Angles To Retire John Cena
2. The Challenge
A company-wide angle features a tournament with the prize of the winner being able to challenge anyone to a match of their choosing. Each participant has an arch-enemy he wants to get his shot at, but when Cena wins, he reveals he doesn't want to cash in his match against someone he hates. Instead, he wants the biggest challenge possible, and chooses the very best. It could be AJ Styles, who starts talking about himself as the best wrestler in the world, or a white-hot face who needs a big push to get him to the top.
The two engage in a feud over respect, where both appreciate and even like the other but know they have to defeat him to say they really are the best. The feud culminates in a high-profile match with a long build, and Cena is defeated by the man he chose as an opponent.
Finally, Cena reveals he was looking for someone to retire him, and knew the tournament prize was a way to ensure he got it. Cena can bow out gracefully and his opponent is established as being the very best in the WWE.
