10 WWE Bait And Switches Which Actually Worked
4. Edge Rains On John Cena's Parade (New Year's Revolution 2006)
For the second time on this list, just when fans thought they had a night all figured out, WWE opted to use a 'Rated R Superstar' surprise appearance as a way of shaking up what was expected.
Three years before he snuck up on Kofi Kingston and ruined his dreams of becoming a world champ, Edge was given his first opportunity to rain on a babyface's parade when he cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase on John Cena at New Year's Revolution in 2006.
Cena had just seen off Kurt Angle, Shawn Michaels, Kane, Carlito and Chris Masters in the formidable Elimination Chamber, an unlikely feat in itself.
So, after such a gruelling battle, the WWE Universe had seemingly come to peace with the fact that Cena would be leaving the arena as the beaten up WWE Champion.
Vince McMahon's unannounced appearance quickly put a stop to all that, though, as his reveal of Edge as Cena's immediate next challenger set the tone for all MITB sudden cash-ins going forward.
People bought their tickets to the event thinking that they would only be witnessing the one WWE title bout. But, by the time the show had reached its end, not only had the audience been floored by this impromptu second defence and subsequent title change, they'd also witnessed yet another glorious WWE bait and switch as the all conquering hero was toppled when he (and we) least expected it.
