'We came to see Daniel Bryan become WWE Champion!' the WWE Universe cried on the night of SummerSlam 2013, and they got their wish... for a few minutes.

John Cena and D-Bry closed out the Summer extravaganza in 2013 with a blockbuster main event for the title. Cena thoroughly proved that he could go with the wrestling purist and Bryan only further hammered home just how over he was with every single fan in that arena.

However, even though it was what the people wanted, it still felt unlikely that Bryan would be walking out of the place as champ. Yet, against all odds he somehow managed to beat the mighty Cena (and the WWE system) and became your new WWE Champion - briefly.

Then, just as the confetti started to fall, Mr. Money in the Bank (another one!) Randy Orton made his way down the ramp and special guest referee Triple H nailed the 'American Dragon' with a pedigree. Orton pinned Bryan and the fans in attendance had their happy ending blown to bits in front of their very eyes at the last second.

In giving Bryan his moment and convincing the WWE Universe that dreams really could come true, WWE managed to pull off one of the finest bait and switches ever. This in turn lit the fuse for Bryan's coronation on the Grandest Stage of Them All at 'Mania XXX, so it's fair to say that this moment of heartbreak served its purpose in the long run.
