While the match with Hulk Hogan never got off the ground, Mike Tyson would go on to have some monumental appearances for WWE in the late '90s when he stared across the ring at Stone Cold Steve Austin in the build for WrestleMania XIV. It concluded with Tyson being the special guest referee for Austin vs. Shawn Michaels in the headline match at the event. This was when many believe WWE turned the tide in the war with WCW, going onto to defeat them in the Monday Night Wars.

Cut to three years later and WWE once again wanted to do serious business with Tyson, pursuing a match against the biggest heel in the company at the time, Triple H. Hunter wanted the match for the mainstream recognition but also because he was a huge boxing fan.

It would have been fitting given Tyson knocked out HHH’s teammate Shawn Michaels out with a punch at WrestleMania XIV, so there was already a story built there.

Triple H revealed earlier this year why the match didn’t take place:

“We were going to do six rounds. I don’t remember if it was going to be full boxing rules, or whether I was wearing gloves. But it ended up being a deal where the whole thing just would have been a ludicrous amount of money, and it got pushed off."

They never took on each other in singles competition but they would later end up in a tag match on an edition of Raw in 2010 when DX took on Tyson and Chris Jericho, only for Tyson to swerve Jericho and knock him out clean with a punch as he and DX celebrated in the ring together with crotch chops.
