10 WWE Debuts That Were DOOMED From The Start
5. Christian on ECW
Christian is a Hall of Famer by any metric you want to judge a superstar. He has elite in-ring psychology, his mic work is out of this world as both a lovable face and a dastardly heel, and his accolades and championships stand among the biggest names to ever work in the industry. Perhaps most poignantly, when it comes to this list, Christian's solo work away from the clutches of Vince McMahon has reaped the biggest rewards of his career.
After years away from WWE, the former Intercontinental, European, Hardcore, and Tag Team Champion returned as part of the new-look ECW to confront their then-World Champion, Jack Swagger. As the crowd goes suitably ballistic, Todd Grisham gives a barely interested "It's... Christian" call on commentary that totally detracts from the crowd's ovation and significance of his return to the WWE.
It would be easy to be frustrated with the announcer, but in a recent social media post, Grisham reveals that McMahon himself ordered Todd to give a muted response to Christian's arrival, going as far as to tell him to "not get excited at all". When that is the man in charge of your creative future, it becomes the definition of "dead on arrival".
