10 WWE "Divas" Who Missed The Revolution
9. Gail Kim
Gail Kim is remarkable for being a missed opportunity of WWE not just once, but on two separate runs with the company. Widely considered one of the best female wrestlers of the last generation, Gail Kim endured two stints with a company who, until now, had no real use for a talented wrestler except bikini contests and girlfriend storylines.
Prior to Gail Kim’s arrival in TNA, their women’s scene wavered between underwhelming wrestling (Leilani Kai defending the NWA women’s title in dark matches) and softcore porn (Lollipop vs Holly Wood in topless catfights). Kim served as the figurehead for a new era of women’s wrestling in TNA, stripping out the eye-candy angles and putting the focus back on the ringwork, and doing so created a viable platform for women to wrestle on television in the US without succumbing to the Diva style.
She became the inaugural TNA Knockout champion, and has since gone on to hold that title a record 6 times. This isn’t to say that TNA have utilised her to full potential either, but when they take the effort to portray her as a dominant athlete, they’re going leaps and bounds beyond were WWE drew their line.
Gail Kim has to be a massive influence to the current wave of upcoming women in wrestling, and she was supremely wasted in WWE.
