Barely a day goes by without one or two whispers about CM Punk coming back to professional wrestling.

But usually the rumour-mongers take the precaution of hedging their bets: he's considering a comeback, they say, or he might return, in a year - maybe.

In March 2014, though - just a month after he had taken his leave (and before he was officially off the WWE payroll) - we had something concrete.

Dave Meltzer and the Wrestling Observer Newsletter had received a tip-off that he would be appearing on Monday Night Raw in his hometown of Chicago.

To confuse things further, WWE actually played his entrance music at the top of the show, but - after a huge pop - Paul Heyman walked out instead, unaccompanied.

The source who leaked the information was said to have deliberately misled WON, for - and this is(n't) a direct quote - "the lulz".
