Everyone comes back eventually, they say. Everyone, that is, except Randy Savage.

The Macho Man burnt his bridges with Vince McMahon in 1994, and whilst many of his contemporaries - even Ultimate Warrior, in the end - found their way back to a WWE ring, Savage never managed to bury the hatchet.

It seemed inevitable that he would, though, at some point. He was simply too big a name for WWE to leave out in the cold - especially as it looked to overturn Nitro's growing lead in the Monday Night Wars.

At Survivor Series 1998, rumours surfaced that Savage - on a hiatus from WCW - was going to be Mankind's mystery first-round opponent in the WWF Title tournament.

Instead, it was pre-Gillberg Duane Gill, who was beaten in 30 seconds.
